Summary:

January 2013 was windy with average rainfall and slightly below average temperatures.

January 2013 started fairly mild with mild daytime and night time temperatures this was however to change for the middle part of the month as cold arctic air spread across the UK which slowly bought down daytime and night time temperatures. From the 19th - 21st was partially chilly with maximums getting no higher than 4.8 c and night time minimums falling below freezing. During these cold days Areas of Cornwall West of Truro saw snowfall for the first time in roughly 2 years falling on the night of 20th/21st measuring about 4 cm (1.5 inches). This was however short lived as the rising temperature from the sun and rain showers during the afternoon melted most of it away.

During the last 7 days of January temperatures started becoming milder with maximums reaching double figures again.

The majority of the month was dominated by low pressure bringing unsettled conditions.

Total Rainfall for January was 116.0mm (98.2% of Average) and rain was recorded on 25 days of 31, Snow fell on 1 day. 2013 was our second wettest January so far.

Temperatures were slightly below average for January with an average high of 8.5C (0.4C below average for January), an average low of 4.4C (0.3C below average for January) and an overall monthly average of 6.5C (-0.3C above average for January). Three air frosts were recorded.

The dominant wind direction was NE. The maximum gust was 51.6 mph on the 27th. There was an average wind speed of 11.2 mph, and the total wind run was 8387.4 miles. Making it our second windiest month since the station was set up.
